I often sit down to work on an acting reel and end up doing anything but. I find memorizing lines in a vacuum doesn’t work for me, so I invite you to join me for a three week reel creating trial. Over these three weeks we will sit down and get to know each other a little bit, talk a bit about what type of reel we want to create, find monologues/scripts, and then film. Simple as that, this is open to anyone wanting to develop a reel for auditioning.
I find myself looking at audition pages where they want you to link your portfolio or reel. Here’s the problem, when I sit down to memorize without an intention I never follow through. Come hangout with me as we hold each other accountable and provide insight and support.
PREFACE! I am not an acting instructor, I have limited training, but a lot of ambition and desire. I have a few recourses and an idea for how each session will go, but no set timeline or rules. If this workshop proves to be successful, or not, I’ll be asking some questions about the experience after we conclude. We will be working as a team and supporting each other through this process, not tearing each other down.
IMPORTANT! The first two meeting spots have not been solidified, but October 18th will be at my personal house out in Deep East Portland, basically Gresham. At my house I have a great space to film reels, but I want to meet in a neutral space before then. Attendance of the first two sessions is mandatory to film acting reels.
Session 1
Introductions, Interests, and Basics
Who are you? What are you wanting to create a reel for? Tips on how to film an audition.
The first session is getting a sense of what we are creating. As a team we’ll discuss what we want to do for our own reel and hear about another persons. What is the type of reel you’re curating? Is it a comedy reel, drama reel, commercial reel, or even a voice over? Each person has a different and unique perspective which helps round out rough edges.
Besides getting to know each other I have a few recourses I can share with everyone from finding monologues/scenes to the Dos and Don’ts of auditioning.
Session 2
Working through Material and Fundamentals of Filming
Week two will consist of reading over various pieces of media that everyone brings in. Talking about what we want to do, asking ourselves if it fits into the reel we want to make, and sharing the material with each other. Maybe someone brings in something you really connect with, ask if you could get a copy. Everyone will have a different interpretation to the material. We’ll all have different reels so borrow what you need to to feel confident.
Session 3
FILMING!
On October 18th we’ll be filming the reels. Depending on how many people there are I will either do timeslots, or have everyone come over to film together. We will be using our own phones to film, but I have nice lights to setup and big white wall to film in front of. Snacks will be provided.
I look forward to meeting you!
